How Philly Beats NYC in the Wine Game
|
|
Nearly 20 years! We’ve been eating New York’s lunch for so long we could open a delicatessen.
From the very beginning, the Core Wine Program has been drawing the top talent from NYC and DC. Why do students commute up to three hours –one way!– to attend wine classes in Philly? I’m 99% sure it’s not my ruggedly handsome looks.
Even after two decades, your passion astonishes us. It’s a wonderful feeling, but to sustain it we are driven to exceed expectations every semester. Maybe that’s why our wine school resonates with both students and teachers. It’s a virtuous cycle of wine and education and passion.
This is the long way of saying there are only 7 spots available in the Springtime Core program starting in May. Eat it, New York!

Bodegas Gormaz 2014
Ribera del Duero Crianza
With Rioja, the region of Ribero Del Duero produces some of the world’s best tempranillo-based wines. This is a spectacular value for this quality. Full bodied with dense tannins and impressive oak elements. Kirsch and mocha notes are in front of the leafy and more complex flavors in the background.

Price in PA Wine & Spirits Stores: $12.99

Cune 2012 Rioja Gran Reserva
CVNE is the bomb and the reserva is always a school favorite. This bottling may even be better than the spectacular 2009 vintage. The age is showing as dried cherry and plum, with a fresh strawberry note under a deep cut of mineral. A classically elegant wine that harkens back to a different era.

Price in PA Wine & Spirits Stores: $19.99

Chateau Miraval “Studio” 2018
Rosé, Provence
The region of Provence has been making rosé for centuries. This wine shows just how far ahead they are in the pink wine game.
Aromas of wild strawberry and burnt sage are followed by notes of burnt butter and quince. Spice and orange marmalade flavors round out this pretty wine.

Signae 2011 Sagrantino di Montefalco
I am very glad to see this bottling again, it’s even better than their 2007 Sagrantino which we reviewed a few years ago. This seething beauty unfolds with mineral, bright cherry and sauvage herbs. The structure here is dense with taught tannins. A beautiful but traditionally-made Italian wine from Umbria.

Silver Totem 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Wallula Vineyard
If you are the philosophical sort of wine drinker, or one that appreciates a very good deal, this is a bottle for you. Nothing flashy, but a varietally correct Cabernet from a single vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills in Washington State. Well made, with plenty of graphite and pyrazine.
WSoP Rating: 89 Points
Price in PA Wine & Spirits Stores: $9.99
